¿Eli, Eli, lama sabathani?

Rosie Inguanzo

/ disponiendo y gobernando;

Crucifixion,
attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck 1622, painted in Venice Italy. Note, this painting has a very long history and is debatetable. Obvious are the with influences of Rubens and the Italian school, such as Veronese. This is a long topic of discussion, so I will cease from going any further.

Jesus made his way to a trading post near the Mountain of Incense, hoping to join a northbound caravan. During those days and nights he often remembered his dog, Philosopher, the most faithful friend he had ever had.

At the trading post, Jesus learned that, as a consequence of years of upheaval in the South, commerce had been disrupted and few merchants traveled there anymore. Even the kshatriyas, or soldiers, weren't returning from that territory carrying the spoils of war to trade for money, clothes or barley.

Jesus decided to continue towards the north along the back trails of the Incense Mountain. It was the longest but also the safest way to Bactria those days.

Jesus traveled from village to village among the serpent-worshipping tillers and herdsmen of the land, sojourning wherever he felt welcome, fraternizing with those who welcomed him, exchanging for food and shelter the little turquoise that the Indus had not snatched from him more than four years before.

The population of the villages that Jesus found in the mountain valleys was classed in groups of color called vaisa. The people of black complexion, called shudras, the workers, were the oldest inhabitants of the land; the vaisyas, for the most part merchants, farmers and tradesmen, were also people of dark skin, but not totally black; the kshatriyas were warriors of lighter skin; and the Brahmans were priests of Persian descent, also called arya, or noble. He heard of a dismembered divinity of unknown origin called Purusha from which all the dwellers of the land descended: the shudras or servants had derived from its feet, the vaisyas or craftsmen from its thighs, the kshatriyas or fighters from its arms, and the brahmans or priests from its mouth.

Among the very poor shudras and the not very prosperous vaisyas, Jesus encountered many devotees of an exceptional man they called Buddha, who had lived twenty generations before. Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama as he had been named at birth, was presumed to be the son of a king. Jesus heard embellished narratives of dreams that the queen mother had before Buddha's birth, forewarning her that she had been impregnated by an emanation of enlightenment and announcing the coming of the one who was destined to be truly great. The queen mother was said to have died giving birth to Buddha as lights in the sky summoned kings to greet the newborn.

Siddhartha had dwelled in a beautiful palace, shielded by wealth from the sundry miseries of the world. He had known the quiet pleasures of a studious mind, the hunt, and the vigorous exercises of the military arts. For twenty-nine years, he lived a life of solace, mindless of others, blinded by his own well-being and happiness. Ha married and had a son.

One day, as Siddhartha toured the boroughs in his father's estates, he found an old man, a sick man and a corpse. Thereafter, his life changed. Once he had seen the ugliness of old age, once he had heard the whines of a sick man mangled with sloughs and once he had smelled the putrid remains of the dead, Siddhartha could no longer remain in his castle drinking out of gilded goblets or riding steeds in his fields and hunting grounds.

Siddhartha Gautama left his father's castle and, for seven years, lived in privation, keeping the company of mendicant Brahmans. He had purposed to achieve nirvana --the oblivion to human reality--, through self-denial.

On one occasion, while Siddhartha was resting under a fig tree, he determined that privation did not lead to the desired nirvana any more than the life of pleasures he had known before. It was then that he received the revelation of samsara --the will to live-- and the way out of perpetual deaths and rebirths.

And for more than forty years, until his death, Siddhartha Gautama, called the Buddha after his enlightenment under the fig tree, preached the four universal truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the attachment which brings about reincarnations, the truth of redemption from the will to live, and the truth of nirvana, the termination of rebirths.

As Jesus visited the many temples that had been dedicated to Buddha's bones and to his teeth and talked to the learned men of the various sects that had embraced Buddha's teachings, he gradually collected the preachments attributed to the enlightened one:

*Still all desires.
Overcome individuality.
Pursue the unborn, the nirvana.
All is impermanent,
like the flame sustained by the lamp's oil
which is never the same.
The will to live, samsara, is eternal.
Life's nature is hollow and ephemeral.
The quelling of passions and attachments
leads to nirvana,
the flame that allays
when the lamp's oil dwindles.

Buddha had never claimed that a god had spoken through him. He counseled men not to pray to the Unknowable and to reject the cult of supernatural beings. He had viewed speculation as useless since man cannot speak for mute gods.

Jesus also heard during his frequent contacts with the inhabitants of the valleys that Buddha had eaten in the homes of courtesans and had maintained that the poor and the lowly, the rich and the high are all one, that castes are *like rivers that unite in the sea+ and that hatred ceases by love, anger ceases by kindness and evil ceases by good. "The more evil comes from a man," Buddha had said, "the more good shall come from me."

Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, had died of indigestion in the aftermath of a wild boar dinner. He had been incinerated. Jesus found that, regardless of sect, all his followers believed that wisdom lies in stilling selfish desire, which is life's greatest evil.

Along with the followers of Buddha, who thought that the mind was a ghost constantly being reborn, Jesus met many gainsayers and no-sayers who yelled everywhere that fools and wise men alike cease to be after death and that man is the doubter and the doubt. The no-sayers would tell the rich: "Of immortality, there is no hope through wealth." And they would say to the poor: "There isn't hope for anything through poverty."

During the many months of meandering through the mountain trails, Jesus emulated the contemplative life of the Buddhists, striving for the control of the senses and the mastery of the imagination. He escaped Urvashi's memory completely because, for him, she was the agony of samsara. Two realities always loitered beyond his days of meditation: he did not wish to be reborn to life in the loathsome forms he had come to know during his travels and he was reluctant to become nothing, like the gainsayers preached. And regardless of how much he mused about nirvana, he was never able to understand whether it was the perfect happiness or the absolute void.

As Jesus moved along the snaky way to Bactria, he entered temples dedicated to gods who had emitted all from themselves where he attended rituals and worshipped their carved images. He was fascinated with Agni, the lightning, with Indra, thunder and storm, with Varuna, who watches through the sun, which is his great eye, and keeps the stars on course much like Ahura-Mazda.

In a mountain hamlet by the perpetual snows, Jesus heard of a Most High Seer who dwells in Heaven. This God wasn't worshipped by anyone and his liturgy was exceptionally brief. Jesus inquired much about the nameless deity all over the region, but young or old, men or women, shepherds or craftsmen always gave him the same answer. The mountaineers had only one prayer to this God, which summarized all their beliefs:

*Whether the Will of He,
who existed before night and day,
created all that is
or not,
only He knows,
or perchance he knows not."

Could not the crucifixion of Christ serve as an example as to what awaits us all? How should we face death?
Does Christ not embrace the end of his mortal life, and as did Pope John Paul II, show us that there is dignity in dying, as is in birth?
The Crucifixion serves us as the way to release ourselves from our mortal prison into a heavenly, spiritual existence. The transcendence of our mortal being toward a spiritual one. A guide persay.

"Father forgive them for they know not what they have done"!

Well I will confess, my spanish is something less to be desired. Yet, my single fingered typing method is much worse. I know God forgives me, since I was created in this form, yet I beg your forgiveness for the travesties I have committed on such an expressive idiom. Although I think of the word and grammatical usage in a proper manner, I tend to betray these established methods by typing "tracianar" instead of "traicionar", although I'm aware of the correct form of spelling. Perhaps, all these challenges which the Creator has continously placed upon me are taking their toll, or the unnatural chemistry which I'm required to ingest affects these abilities. Such is the matter of survival, and the lashes we must receive prior to our crucifixion (no I am not the son of God, yet I ponder if I am truly a reflection of his sacred image). As Rosie may attest, it is this physical pang which positively serves a purpose to sharpen our senses, and enables us to cut to the heart of the matter, and laugh off the small stuff.
So short a time, for so much to do, and yet, justly so.
