"Killing Time", is an exhibit curated by a true visionary, a modern-day Piranesi, along with two unknowns. This is a recipe for mediocrity or total disaster. Glexis Novoa, the main curator, is a serious artist with important museum monographs to his credit. How did the other two persons get in the picture? Would it be kunstwelt (art world) politics?
It is strange that New York's Exit Art is not forthcoming with the information that Mr. Elvis Fuentes, one of the curators is in a conflict of interest situation with his full-time job at El Museo del Barrio and his art consultancy for Puerto Rico's CIRCA art fair. That is, at least, an appearance of impropriety frowned upon in professional circles.
Cuba's isolation has made most Americans idealize its educational achievements. It is, alas, an inflated myth. I have taught art theory and art history at UF's New World School of the Arts (College Division) and Miami-Dade College, prior to moving to New York and, a few years ago, while commuting. The art history taught at the University of Havana (given my experience with former students and the many graduates and artists I have met in Miami) would be at the level of my "C" students. Let us say they would not last long at NYU's Institute of Fine Arts. I do not see Jonathan Brown, Keith Christiansen, Monsieur de Montebello, Edward Sullivan rushing off to Havana as guest lecturers. Do Mr. Fuentes and Ms. Villalonga have BA's or Masters? Have they also studied in the United States or European universities? There should be at Exit somebody trained with the rigor of art history in real universities, not to have a First World representative, but to have the assurance of strict historical methodology and philosophical training.
Exit's announcement mentions the curators' experience in European museums, especially time spent in Aachen. Yes, indeed, I have spent quite a bit of time in Aachen. I love Carolingian art. I also enjoy illuminated manuscripts from the Ottonian period. I have studied the correspondence between the production from German monasteries and the great Spanish Beato de Liebana (as in the Morgan Beatus). Does that make me a curator of Cuban art?
I have a feeling that May 12th at EXIT will be a spectacular evening. It will be an occasion to feel "politically correct," outside the mainstream. The New York intellectual bourgeoisie will enjoy mojitos with a member of UNEAC (Castro's intellectual and artistic police, those who made life impossible for gay artists like Reinaldo Arenas), a rare and poignant opportunity to host someone from "enemy soil," Havana (Ms. Villalonga). Exit Art will host an arty and subversive West-Side cocktail, with a Havana-based curator who with her presence will open New Yorker's eyes to what the embargo and the Republicans have tried to hide. This is the perfect bourgeois political praxis against George W. Those too lazy for political activism against corruption and incompetence go to cocktails. There is nothing more therapeutic than to feel politically correct. Interestingly, in the roster of artists, there is a number of loud anti-Communist voices this side of the Strait of Florida. Somehow, they do not seem to mind Ms. Yukisladys Villalonga's affiliation. Could this newfound flexibility be explained as the product of a New York exhibit at Exit? In any case, all I ask is to get back to Swifty's for dinner, there is only so long I can stay away from Old Masters and the Upper East Side. Ask these Aachen experts who Alcuin of York was and they may be at a loss for words. Please, get better curators next time.

Sincerely,

Justo J. Sanchez

Este blog es una parodia. No me imagino nada peor.

-Carlos Alfonzo
-Juan Boza

Abajo Killing Time !!!!!

"And though the 45-year-old embargo allows for cultural exchanges, as of yesterday none of the eight Cuba-based artists participating had been able to get visas to attend Saturday's opening.

"We still have hope," said Elvis Fuentes, one of the curators. "Lately, similar visa cases have been denied. But we still have hope."

Si no vas a parecer aun mas parcializado.

I'm glad and proud to be an American. As an American artist, I intend to unviel my latest public monument in New York on May the 19th, it will be unvieled by to the equestrian statue of Jose Marti, at Central Park. The title of the sculpture is Dignity among Cuban Artists. The empty pedestal will be unvieled, and picture and postcards of emptyness will be distributed among those attending the ceremonies. The "Falta de Dignidad" sculpture is inspired by the way in which Cuban artists and intellectuals unite in saying or doing nothing, except for themselves. Members of the public are encouraged to stick thier finer up their ass in order to get a sense of the tropical aroma of the streets of Havana, and the artistic acheivements of the Island.

Great show. I applause it goes beyond people like the ones who write in this blog. Very few interesting comments, more pseudo-bourgeois gossips. Mr. Sanchez makes his point, not without being acid and cynical (ie. very partial for my taste). I suggest one goes to see it, and come back talking about the works. The selection from the Cuban side (artists living in Cuba) seems fine: not apologetic of the system, but still critical. Neither the way is it presented. I don’t think it should be a show that includes every single artist. Not even that it has to be representative of every decade and EVERY trend, since it is not a super natural show. I look forward for other proposals like this in the American scene.
