AT,
We are not a violent society. We are animals and worse, human beings. Independent of our culture, nationality, history or philosophy. From the onset of our genetic coding, be it the Neanderthals or Cro-Magnons, we have not changed our violent ways. Recent studies on chimpanzees in the wild, have shown pre-meditated murder by organized "gangs" or groups, against a singled out individual chimpanzee. Similar behavior have been discovered among Killer Whales, Rats, and other species. These scientific and naturalist findings becons the question, "Are living things on this planet programed to kill?" The answer is obviously yes, survival for the majority of all living things, be it ocean coral, a cancerous cell, or an invading microbe, must adhere to this sad rule. Yet, we find that the more evolved or "intelligent" a species is, the more sophisticated and massive is the killing ratio. Sadly, it is more a case of nature, and further enhanced by our nurture.

Oye Dino, sigues todavia haciendo video art?

The Happy Land Fire was an arson fire which killed 87 people trapped in an unlicensed social club called "Happy Land" in New York City, on March 25, 1990. Most of the victims were ethnic Hondurans celebrating Carnival.[1] Unemployed Cuban refugee Julio González, whose former girlfriend was employed at the club, was arrested shortly after and ultimately convicted of arson and murder.

The incident
Before the blaze, Happy Land was ordered closed for building code violations in November of 1988. Violations included no fire exits, alarms or sprinkler system. No follow-up by the fire department was documented.

That evening González had argued with his former girlfriend Lydia Feliciano, a coat check girl at the club. González was ejected by the bouncer. He was heard to scream drunken threats. He returned to the establishment with a plastic container of gasoline which he spread on the only staircase into the club.

The fire exits had been blocked to prevent people from entering without paying the cover charge. In the panic that ensued, a few people escaped by breaking a metal gate over one door.

González then returned home, took off his gasoline-soaked clothes and fell asleep. He was arrested a few hours later. Once advised of his rights, he talked freely of how he caused the fire. A medical examination found him to be sane.

[edit] Response
Found guilty on August 19, 1991, of 87 counts of arson and 87 counts of murder, González was sentenced to 174 twenty-five year sentences, to be served concurrently. It was the longest prison term ever imposed in the state of New York. He will be eligible for parole in March 2015.

The building that housed Happy Land was managed in part by Jay Weiss, husband of actress Kathleen Turner.[3] The New Yorker quoted Turner saying, "the fire was unfortunate but could have happened at a McDonald's."[4] The building's owner, Alex DiLorenzo 3d, and leaseholders Weiss and Morris Jaffe were found not criminally responsible, since they had tried to close the club and evict the tenant.[5]

The street outside the former Happy Land social club (on the corner of Southern Boulevard and East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx) has been renamed "The Plaza of the Eighty-Seven" as a means of memorializing the victims.[citation needed] Five of the victims were students at nearby Theodore Roosevelt High School, which held a memorial service for the victims in April 1990.

Dinorah,

MD

"Are living things on this planet programed to kill?" The answer is obviously yes.

Mano, take a look at the international response to yesterday's slaughter and you'll realize that we do have a problem. The discussion of whether we're intrinsically goodor bad is not the issue. We can produce laws that reduce the availability of guns in the hands of young people. Getting a gun in this country is pretty easy.

Tumiami,
First, this killer was Korean, and obviously had a problem and fit the profile of a psycopath or mass murderer. The laws innacted were followed. Even under liberal viewpoints.
Please note;
U.S. Constitution
Bill of Rights
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. (year 1791)
--------------------
Now, when we calculate how many people are killed by drunk or drugged drivers per year (cases of busloads of students killed by drunk drivers), should we outlaw driving?

The first thing the Castro regime did was to outlaw guns, and if you were caught with one in your home during the searches, you would be shot by the "Regime". Weapons, such as guns, are a guarantee of self defense against repressive intruders or governments. It is a safety issue also. If you break into my home, at night, do I wait till you kill me with a knife, or should I take an African spear of my wall and throw at you? Call the police, yes, and wait the 10 minutes while my life and that of my family is endangered. Remember hurricane Wilma? 3 weeks with no lights, most people had no phones, and no police to be found. Guns, yes, they are a tool, just as an axe is, which was sufficient to kill Trotsky. So, unless you want to meet with my .38 or 9mm, call before entering my house unannounced, or else, you guessed it, BANG!

Alfredo Triff dijo...

Mano: The issue is not the absolute abolition of guns, but a more severe control of powerful arms. Don't mix libertarians ideals with those of the NRA's lobby. This we could argue some other time.

Anónimo dijo...

Sounds likes a good post. Many argainst registration of arms because it makes it easier for the government to Big Brother you. At the same time, even if it is registered, fire arms can be stolen from homes or autos. I have had guns pulled and pointed at me in my past, and it is not a good feeling, one that initiates a reflex response of fight or flight. Yet, on that note, the history of most nations and thier conquest follow the progress of arms development. Think of Spain in the age of conquest and their use of equetrian training and Toledo blades. Yes, let's cover this some other day. Aqui hay mucha tela para cortar.
