Marterologías

Tumiamiblog

INKI! Welcome back!

MD

Waldo DÍAZ-BALART (b. 1931, Holguin): A longtime resident of Madrid, Díaz-Balart studied accounting and political science and economics in Havana before moving to New York to pursue art studies in 1962. Díaz-Balart lectures frequently and his work – explorations of color and light in geometric paintings and light sculpture – has been widely exhibited. Most recently, he had one-man shows in the Netherlands, in Spain and in the United States at the Art Gallery of Florida International University. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation fellowship and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, and the Museum of Modern Art in Huenfeld, Germany, among others. In 1992 he published the book Waldo Díaz-Balart, Ensayos de Arte. (Cintas for art, 1968-69, 1969-70)

Waldo Díaz-Balart, who left Cuba in 1959 and never returned, agrees that the situation is extremely delicate for the quedaditos. Having lived here for years, he knows Madrid's Cuban exile community well and has firsthand knowledge of Castro, who was once married to his sister Mirta. Nephews Lincoln and Mario Díaz-Balart represent South Florida in Congress.

''It's tremendously difficult for these people,'' he said. "It's very tricky, this whole issue of going back and forth, because the regime's control stretches beyond its own borders.''

Modern Cuban Painters (1944), the landmark exhibition at MoMA, established in New York several artists who became known as the Havana School; a group characterized by a colorful palette and a figurative mode. Acquiring prominence in the New York art world, Cuban artists were given increasing attention. A decade later in 1955 Galeria Sudamericana exhibited a group of younger Cuban artists who were creating works in a non-figurative and less colorful style. Over the years, galleries such as Sudamericana, Cisneros, Roland de Aenlle and Bonino, along with institutions like the Center for Inter-American Relations (today's Americas Society) and the Brooklyn Museum, brought together several group shows where the work of these artists was represented. Between the 1950s and the 1970s these organizations, with the help of private collectors, shaped what is known today as modern Latin American art.

In this spirit, Abstraction: Presence of Cuban Painters in New York (1950s-70s) bases its selection on this tradition of group shows. Waldo Balart, Hugo Consuegra, Carmen Herrera, Guido Llinas, and Emilio Sanchez were all part of this group of Cuban artists exhibiting widely in New York during this time.

Hugo Consuegra (1929-2003) was trained as an architect and moved to New York in 1970. In his work he painted his inner world, reflecting upon his emotional and existential concerns. Consuegra was a founding member of the artists' collective Los Once. His works are found in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana; Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, Washington, DC; the New York Public Library and New York University.

Guido Llinas (1923-2005) attended Havana University and moved to Paris in 1963. He often used the color black in a gestural abstraction, creating new universes within the pictorial plane. Llinas was a member of the artists' collective Los Once. His works are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana.

Waldo Balart (b. 1931) attended Havana University and later studied art at MoMA. His work uses mathematical matrixes, with a rigorous chromatic language as a foundation; combining lines and color fields to create a complexity of planes in a geometric abstract mode. His works are part of the permanent collection at MoMA, New York and the Reina Sofia in Madrid.

Carmen Herrera (b. 1915) trained for a short while as an architect and started her career as a sculptor before evolving into an abstract painter. She moved to New York in 1939 with a sojourn in Paris from 1948 to 1954. Her style is defined by the precision and simplicity of a geometric structure, evoking a deep poetic and metaphysical reality. Her paintings proposed a radical way of thinking of line, form, and space in relationship to negative and positive space. Her works are part of the permanent collection at MoMA, New York and Tate Modern.

Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) attended Yale University and the Art Students League in New York. Though he did not work exclusively in an abstract mode, his fascination with architecture led him to explore the interconnection of pictorial planes and light with an abstract sensibility. His works are in the collection of MoMA, New York the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.

This exhibition is curated by Rafael DiazCasas, a Cuban born scholar with an interest in Latin American abstraction. He specializes in the work of Diez Pintores Concretos Cubanos, Luis Martinez Pedro and Carmen Herrera.

A nadar, bye.
